Taking your driving test in Hackney or the surrounding East London area can feel challenging.
You may face busy junctions, cyclists, buses, narrow residential streets and changing speed limits. Roads around Clapton, Dalston, Mare Street and Kingsland Road can become especially busy.
The good news is that most test mistakes can be avoided with calm preparation and regular practice.
I’m Hamdi from AMDI Driving School. After more than 14 years as a DVSA-approved driving instructor, I have seen the same problems affect many learners.
Here are five common mistakes to watch for.
Important: There is no single route that every learner will follow. Examiners can use different roads and directions. Your aim should be to drive safely and independently, rather than memorising a route.
1. Not Observing Properly at Junctions
Poor observation at junctions is one of the most common reasons learners fail the practical driving test across Great Britain.
This can be a particular problem on Hackney’s busy side roads.
Parked vehicles, delivery vans, cyclists and pedestrians can make it difficult to see clearly. Learners sometimes look once and then move before checking again.
How to avoid it
Use a calm routine:
- Check your mirrors.
- Reduce your speed early.
- Choose the correct gear.
- Look both ways properly.
- Move only when you are certain it is safe.
At a closed junction, creep forward slowly until you can see.
Do not rush because another driver is waiting behind you. The examiner wants to see a safe decision.
One learner from Clapton told me:
“I thought I had to move quickly. Hamdi taught me that taking one extra moment to check was safer. It made me much calmer on my test.”
2. Missing Mirror Checks
Many learners know they should check their mirrors. The problem is remembering to check them at the correct time.
You should check the appropriate mirrors before:
- changing speed
- changing direction
- moving around parked vehicles
- changing lanes
- signalling
- pulling over or moving off
Missing an important mirror check may become a serious fault when another road user is affected.
How to avoid it
Use the Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre routine.
Your mirror check should happen before your signal or change of position. Make it clear and natural, but do not exaggerate your head movement.
Hackney has many cyclists and motorcyclists. Check your mirrors regularly and be especially careful before moving left or passing parked vehicles.
The DVSA expects drivers to use their mirrors effectively before changing direction or speed.
3. Poor Positioning Around Parked Cars
Residential roads around Dalston, Lower Clapton and Stoke Newington can feel narrow.
Learners often make one of two mistakes:
- driving too close to parked cars
- moving too far towards oncoming traffic
Watch for doors opening and pedestrians walking between vehicles. Give parked cars a safe amount of space whenever possible.
How to avoid it
Look well ahead.
If an oncoming vehicle is approaching and there is not enough room for both of you, decide early who should wait. Do not squeeze through a gap and hope for the best.
When you need to move around an obstruction:
- Check your mirrors.
- Look for approaching traffic.
- Signal when it would help someone.
- Move out smoothly.
- Return to a safe position when clear.
Keep a steady course. Avoid repeatedly moving in and out between parked vehicles.
Driving too close to the kerb, road markings or other vehicles can be marked as a positioning fault.
4. Missing Speed-Limit Changes
Hackney contains many 20 mph roads, but you may also meet roads with different limits.
Learners sometimes concentrate so hard on directions that they miss a speed-limit sign. Others drive much too slowly because they are nervous.
Driving safely does not mean driving slowly everywhere. You need to make suitable progress when the road is clear.
How to avoid it
Keep scanning for:
- speed-limit signs
- road markings
- changes in the type of road
- school zones
- traffic-calming measures
- side-road entrances
Check your speed regularly, especially after turning into a new road.
Use the accelerator gently and plan early when approaching crossings, bends or queues.
Remember that the speed limit is a maximum, not a target. In rain, heavy traffic or poor visibility, a lower speed may be safer.
5. Rushing at Busy Roundabouts and Crossroads
Busy East London junctions can make learners feel under pressure.
A common mistake is entering too early and causing another vehicle to slow down. The opposite problem is waiting too long when a safe opportunity is available.
How to avoid it
Approach at a speed that gives you time to assess the junction.
Check:
- the road signs
- your lane
- vehicles already at the junction
- cyclists beside you
- pedestrians near crossings
- the direction and speed of approaching traffic
Do not judge a vehicle only by its indicator. Look at its speed, position and direction of travel.
When a safe opportunity appears, move positively. Do not stop again unless the situation changes.
The examiner is looking for safe judgement, not perfect traffic conditions.
A Simple Test-Day Reminder
Before your Hackney or East London driving test, remember these five words:
Look. Plan. Check. Wait. Move.
Look well ahead.
Plan before you reach the hazard.
Check your mirrors and blind spots.
Wait when it is not safe.
Move confidently when it is safe.
A small mistake does not always mean you have failed. Stay calm and continue driving safely. Do not spend the rest of the test thinking about what happened.
Practise Skills, Not Just Test Routes
Knowing the local roads can help you feel comfortable, but memorising a driving test route is not enough.
Roadworks, traffic and examiner directions can change. You need to feel confident dealing with new situations independently.
During driving lessons in Hackney, I help learners practise:
- busy junctions
- meeting traffic on narrow roads
- safe passing distances
- cyclists and bus lanes
- roundabouts
- independent driving
- common DVSA test faults
The aim is not only to pass your DVSA test. It is to become a calm and safe driver for life.
